Jazz Maui presents Sunset Jazz from 5-7pm on Sunday, March 17th, at the Maui Ku'ia Estate Chocolate Factory in Lahaina featuring the Lady Kiah Quartet. Named for trumpet player and vocalist Lady Kiah, the quartet includes drummer Kevin Garland, bassist Ian Sheridan, and keyboardist Jeff Hellmer. Sunset Jazz concert attendees must be 21 or older and have a valid photo ID. Kiah Abendroth is a third generation female trumpet player. She holds a Master's Degree in Music from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, specializing in classical trumpet performance. Her instructors include renowned trumpeters Judith Saxton, David Washburn, and Dean Boysen (as well as her father, Roy Abendroth, and the inspiration of her mother and grandmother, Lori and Beverley). Although Kiah's training is classical, she also enjoys playing free improvisation, jazz, world, reggae, sacred music, folk and other genres. Kiah has performed with artists such as Ozomatli, Elijah Ray, Fantuzzi, Amber Lily & Tubby Love, in addition to various chamber orchestras, pit orchestras, and jazz ensembles in New York City and around the USA.
Drummer Kevin Garand started his musical journey at UNC Colorado as a jazz major and went on to expand his studies to include music, recording arts, and technology. A founding member of the funk band Three to 5, Kevin has also performed with various other bands including Desert Hollow, Soul Kitchen, and Espresso. In addition to his tight and technical playing, Kevin brings a unique sense of spirit and rhythm - perhaps due to his time in Ghana, where he had the rare opportunity to enhance his skills by learning the art of traditional gahu drumming.
Ian Sheridan is a bassist, producer, and mixing engineer. He has performed and recorded with many artists including Grammy Award-winner Jason Mraz. Ian has produced and engineered multiple songs and albums that have received national radio airplay, charting, and commercial and media placement. He has been playing the bass professionally for more than 20 years.
Jazz pianist Jeff Hellmer has enjoyed a 35-year career as a performer and educator. Twice named a finalist in the Great American Jazz Piano competition, he has performed and taught jazz throughout the USA as well as in Russia and Taiwan. As the long-time director of the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra, he led performances of the band at the North Sea and Montreux Jazz Festivals and has appeared with jazz masters such as Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, John Clayton, and Kenny Garrett.
Sunset Jazz, a part of the Jazz Maui 2024 Maui Music Series, is supported by the Hawaii Tourism Authority Community Enrichment Program.
