Jazz Maui presents Sunset Jazz featuring Father's Day with Sheryl Renee on Sunday, June 18, at the Maui Ku'ia Chocolate Factory in Lahaina. Vocalist Sheryl Renee is being joined by Jeff Hellmer on keyboards, Dave Graber on bass, and Howie Rentzer on drums. Concert goers can enjoy great live jazz and sunset views accompanied by chocolate/beverage pairings in the open-air upstairs pavilion at the Chocolate Bar. Always an audience favorite, vocalist Sheryl Renee moves effortlessly between music genres. She is also an actress, entertainer, and producer. Known as the "Lady with a Golden Voice," she has shared the stage with some of the best talent in the world including Candi Staton, Larry Dunn, Freda Payne, String Cheese Incident, The Contribution, and the Colorado Sumphony Orchestra conducted by the late Marvin Hamlisch. Sheryl performed the national anthem for President Barack Obama and her vocals have been featured on countless recordings and commercials.
Jazz pianist Heff Hellmer has enjoyed a 35-year career as a performer and educator. Twice named a finalist in the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, he has performed and taught jazz throughout the USA as well as in Russia and Taiwan. As the long-time director of the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra, he led performances of the band at the North Sea and Montreux Jazz Festivals and has appeared with jazz masters such as Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, John Clayton, and Kenny Garrett.
Bass player Dave Graber was awarded the Edmonton Jazz Society Scholarship and graduated from Grant MacEwan College with a diploma in Jazz Studies in 1991. He graduated with distinction from the University of Calgary in Jazz Studies/Performance and has studied privately with Gary Willis of Tribal Tech and Charlie Banacos of the New England Conservatory of Music and Berklee College of Music.
Drummer Howie Rentzer has played in lots of top 40 bands in Boston and Los Angeles and in Honolulu where he played with Jimmy Borges, Carol Kai, Maria Muldaur, and Bobby Enriques. On Maui, he has performed with Henry Allen, George Benson, Mose Allison, and Greg Karukas. Howie has opened for Kenny Loggins and was in the band for Howie Mandel's comedy show.
Every Sunday Jazz Maui's Sunset Jazz concert series showcases local and visiting professional jazz musicians. Each week talented guest artists present a variety of different jazz forms demonstrating the evolution of jazz from its beginnings in New Orleans in the 1920s. Sold out shows have featured smooth, latin, bossa nova, dixieland, gypsy, swing, traditional, and other jazz subgenres.
During Sunset Jazz, chocolate sommeliers serve chocolate flights selected from 24 different types/flavors of chocolate and suggest alcoholic pairings for each flight from an extensive wine, spirits, and beer list. Recently, cheese plates have been added to this menu of purchase options. Only available for pre-order at the time of ticket purchase, cheese plates include five kinds of cheese and accompaniments.
