Jazz Maui presents Sunset Jazz featuring the Toby Couture Quartet from 5-7pm on Sunday, June 4, at the Maui Ku'ia Estate Chocolate Factory in Lahaina. In addition to keyboardist Toby Courture, the quartet includes bassist Ashton Yarbrough, drummer Paul Marchetti, and vocalist Pohai Mo'iha. Advance ticket purchase is required and tickets are available at JazzMaui.org.
Keyboardist Toby Couture was born in Northern New York to a music family. His father was a folk musician and his mother played classical music. Toby attended the Conservatory of Music SUNY Purchase College studying jazz piano, classical guitar, percussion, and French language, graduating cum laude. After traveling Europe to practice French and German, Toby worked for years as a freelance musician, bandleader, and composer and also released the album "As You See" with German guitarist Daniel Friederich. Since moving to Maui over ten years ago, he has worked with many local musicians including Willie Nelson, Marty Dread, Guerilla Jazz, and his own projects. He has composed several suites of neo-classical music for local dance company Adaptations Dance Theater, as well as producing and recording work with other local artists.
Ashton Yarbrough has been playing bass for 11 years. He started as a classical bassist in an orchestra but has played all kinds of music including jazz, musical theater, gospel, funk, rock, and mariachi. He also works as a piano teacher and accompanist.
Well known on Maui, Paul Marchetti studied drums and percussion in New York and has performed and recorded with artists such as Mick Fleetwood, Eric Marienthal, Walter Becker, Michael McDonald, Michael Buble, and many more. He started his career in 1973 touring and recording with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary. Marchetti has appeared on national and local television shows and recorded and toured with an international list of artists.
Every Sunday Jazz Maui's Sunset Jazz concert series features a different line-up of world-class live jazz music accompanied by chocolate/beverage pairings. Held in the upstairs open-air pavilion, concert goers can enjoy great jazz and sunset views and an extensive wine, spirits and beer list along with three flights of chocolate and beverage pairings for purchase. Chocolate Sommeliers are on hand to assist with pairings or imbibers can create their own.
Sunset Jazz concert attendees must be 21 or older and have a valid photo ID. Seating is limited and often sold out so advance ticket purchase is required at JazzMaui.org.
Maui Ku'ia Estate Chocolate, through its Chocolate Laulima program, supports local nonprofit organizations such as Arts Education for Children Group/Jazz Maui. Proceeds from concert ticket sales benefit Jazz Maui's music education programs.
Jazz Maui, a branch of the 501(c)-3 nonprofit Arts Education for Children Group, provides opportunities for participation in high quality jazz music education and performances.
