"Roi Roundup" Invasive Species Dive Tournament
Free divers and spearfishers in two-person teams are invited to participate in the “Roi Roundup” invasive species dive tournament scheduled for Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Hard Rock Café in Lahaina. Minors are welcome to participate, but must be partnered with an adult diver and have prior written consent from a parent or guardian.
The Roi Roundup is sponsored by the Office of Mayor Charmaine Tavares, Maui Sporting Goods, Hard Rock Café, local fisherman Darrell Tanaka, Tri-Isle RC&D, Maui Brewing Company and numerous local businesses. The dive tournament targets the introduced carnivorous species roi (peacock grouper), to‘au (blacktail snapper) and ta‘ape (blue-line snapper). The roi are considered invasive due to their status of predators of indigenous reef fish; a single roi can eat up to 146 fish each year and the species is known to have a high risk of carrying the ciguatera toxin that can cause serious illness in some people.
Divers must register by Friday, August 6; applications may be downloaded from www.mauicounty.gov/roiroundup or picked up at Maui Sporting Goods, located at 92 North Market Street, Wailuku, at Hard Rock Café in Lahaina, or Maui Brewing Company in Kahana.
Registered divers may check in at Hard Rock Café on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 6:30 a.m. and must return for weigh-in by noon. A formal program begins at 11:30 a.m. with education stations, a Barnes & Noble book fair and free entertainment by Leokane Pryor and Isaac Lazo. Trophies will be presented for Most Fish, Largest Fish and Smallest Fish.
