May Day Celebration - Festival of Flowers
Since May 1, 1928, May Day has been recognized as Lei Day in Hawai‘i when poet laureate Don Blanding inspired Honolulu residents to wear lei and have lei making demonstrations and contests on this day. Eight decades later, Kapalua Resort is proud to honor this and plantation-era traditions with its annual May Day Celebration on Friday, May 1, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year's celebration theme is "Festival of Flowers" – visitors and residents alike will have the opportunity to share in flower lei making and a lei contest with resort gift prizes. Lei entries will be judged by the public, voting on ballots. Categories include Most Traditional, Most Creative, Most Unusual and Best of Show. Other highlights of the May Day Celebration are hula performances, Hawaiian music and singing, employees' cultural arts displays and collections of memorabilia like aloha shirts, mu`umu`u and artifacts, free samples of Roselani ice cream and Maui Gold pineapples. Admission is free. Join us at Honolua Village Center, 700 Office Road, Kapalua Resort.
