250th birthday ceremonies for Queen Ka`ahumanu

The `Ahahui Ka`ahumanu Chapter IV Wailuku bestows its inaugural Ka`ahumanu Awards upon Aunty Bessie DeMello of Kahului and Lady Grace Spenser of Wailuku at 250th birthday ceremonies for Queen Ka`ahumanu. The event also presents chant, song, hula and lei draping of the queen's statue. `Ahahui ladies wear traditional regalia of black attire with gold feather lei to represent the Hawaiian women's benevolent society.

Ka`ahumanu Ali`i (chiefess) was born March 17, 1768, at Pu`u Ka`uiki by Hana Bay in East Maui. Favorite wife of Kamehameha the Great, she was a fervent Christian after converting, and was known for spreading education by starting schools and distributing books throughout the archipelago.

The Ka`ahumanu Awards salute community service with aloha. Both awardees are members of the 95-year-old Wailuku Chapter IV of `Ahahui Ka`ahumanu.
