SEA-Talk: Discovery of a Remarkable Deep Sea Symphony: First Exploration of the Musicians Seamounts
The Musicians seamounts are a poorly known group of 25+ cone-shaped and ridge-shaped seamounts located 270-800 miles north-northwest of O‘ahu. Earlier this fall, the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer conducted the first ever exploration of these seamounts using its Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Deep Discoverer. Participating scientists were startled to see seamounts covered by deep water corals and sponges; including never before know species. See and explore this unique waterscape as Dr. Christopher Kelley, Program Biologist for the Hawai‘i Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) and graduate faculty in the department of Oceanography at the University of Hawai‘i presents a “note”worthy hour of orchestrated exploration in the remarkable Musicians seamounts.
