Prince Kuhio Day Celebration

The 28th annual event offers daylong entertainment; crafts; food; a farmers market; Makahiki games; kalo cookoff; oratory contest; community-information booths, and a procession of Hawaiian societies and homestead leaders. Performers include the musical group Pu`uwai at 10 a.m., followed by Na Wai `Eha (Kawa`a family) at noon, Homestead at 1 and recording artist Kaniala Masoe at 2. Also, a canned-goods collection benefits nonprofits, such as the Maui Food Bank. 

The ho`olaule`a and a state holiday mark the 146th anniversary of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana`ole's birthday March 26, 1871. Hawai`i salutes Territorial Congressional Delegate Kuhio as the Father of the federal 1920 Hawaiian Homes Commission Act and native Hawaiian homestead program. He also founded the Hawaiian civic club movement; restored the Royal Order of Kamehameha, and originated the county governance structure.

The host Paukukalo Hawaiian Homes Community Association, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and the SCHHA (Sovereign Councils of the Hawaiian Homelands Assembly) Maui Mokupuni co-sponsor the event.
