Chinese New Year Celebration on Front Street in Lahaina

Ring in the Chinese New Year in historic Lahaina Town Friday, February 15th from 530-9pm as festivities kick off with a martial arts demonstration at the Baldwin Home Museum lawn. The traditional Lion dance will follow visiting Front Street merchants and ending with a firecracker display at the Wo Hing Museum.

Chinese immigrants came to Lahaina in the mid 1800's with a dream of gaining fortune and goodwill.  To celebrate cultural Chinese traditions, we commemorate their most treasured event at the only Chinese Museum in Hawaii.

The Chinese New Year is the most important social holiday in China. It is a time for family, feasting and wishing good fortune, health and happiness. Traditionally, the Chinese year follows a lunar calendar with each year represented by an animal. As legend tells, Buddha summoned all the animals of the forest but only 12 answered. To honor these animals, Buddha named each year according to the order in which each animal appeared. After a wild “Year of the Dragon”, we anxiously await the “Year of the Snake” which brings progress, focus and good luck.

All are invited to join in this annual fête as Lahaina Town Action Committee and Lahaina Restoration Foundation hosts a celebration of Chinese tradition and culture. Festivities include children's arts & crafts, Farmer’s Market, “Year of the Snake” merchandise and delicacies from Fu Lin restaurant for sale. A Lion Dance performance and fireworks display will be presented by Ben Seng Au’s “Shaolin Arts”.

The Baldwin Home Museum is located on the corner of Front and Dickenson Streets, with paid parking located on Dickenson Street behind the Baldwin Home Museum. The Wo Hing Museum is located at 858 Front Street in Lahaina Town.
