Japanese Cultural Society of Maui’s Quarterly Meeting: Learning about Japanese New Year Traditions
Members and the general public are invited to attend Japanese Cultural Society of Maui’s quarterly meeting on Thursday, December 27, at 5:30 p.m. at Wailuku Hongwanji social hall. Everyone will learn to make mochi for ozoni, for decorative purposes (kazari mochi) and for dessert (an – filling inside). Traditional mochi pounding in various styles will be experienced by those adventurous to try. Ozoni and various mochi dishes (fried, kinako, etc.) along with a light dinner will be served. President Brian Nagami will preside over a quarterly membership meeting, followed by a presentation on Japanese traditions observed during New Year and a “make your own” kadomatsu activity will be offered. The cost is $10 for mochi sampling and light dinner, and $10 for the kadomatsu and supplies. Event is limited to the first 100 participants and only 30 kadomatsu will be available for purchase. Tickets for the dinner and kadomatsu are available for purchase at Credit Associates of Hawaii in Wailuku starting December 1st , while they last. Deadline for purchase is December 19th.
